The boxship MOL Cosmos lost 20 containers some 22 nautical miles off Mumbai in the same storm on June 22. The Cosmos was en route from Dammam, in Saudi, to Singapore. The lost containers are drifting around the shore and local authorities and vessel traffic warned ships in the vicinity to be cautious of the floating hazards.
MOL released an announcement stating that “inclement weather… resulted in the collapse of empty containers and went overboard(sic).A ship crew member was also injured during lashing check on deck.”
Another boxship, TCI Arjun, while en route from Cochin to Mundra, India lost 5 containers also in the same storm. These containers are reportedly afloat and drifting towards Indian shore. MRCC Mumbai has warned the vessels sailing through the area to keep a lookout on the drifting containers, saying that they are likely to come ashore in the following days.
